Minister of Justice: Justice Everyone Has Been Waiting For Has Finally Arrived!

PHNOM PENH:  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Mr. Koeut Rith, announced on Wednesday that justice has finally been served in the case of former tycoon Srey Sina, who was convicted for his involvement in a brutal murder that has captivated public attention. In a post on his Facebook page, Mr. Rith emphasized the significance of the trial, stating, "Today, I would like to highlight the brutal murder case committed by the criminal Srey Sina."

The case drew widespread condemnation, prompting an unprecedented intervention from Prime Minister Hun Manet, who directed Mr. Rith to ensure strict enforcement of the law. Additionally, the former Prime Minister, Hun Sen, coordinated legal assistance for the victims, providing volunteer lawyers to ensure thorough representation in court.

On December 23, 2024, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court handed down a landmark verdict, sentencing Srey Sina to a maximum prison term of 31 years. The court also mandated substantial compensation amounts: $1 million for each family of the deceased victims, $300,000 for those seriously injured, and $200,000 for individuals with minor injuries.

Deputy Prime Minister Koeut Rith expressed gratitude to the judiciary for its commitment to upholding the law and delivering justice. He called the ruling "a watershed moment in the legal landscape," highlighting its historical significance. "This decision not only imposes the maximum prison sentence according to law, but also awards unprecedented compensation to victims' families—amounts never before seen in murder trial history," he stated.

In discussing the court's guiding principles, Mr. Rith outlined two key tenets: (1) the principle of legal justice, which mandates strict adherence to the law in pursuing justice for victims, and (2) the principle of proportionality, ensuring that both the prison sentence and compensation levels are fitting for the crime committed.

While acknowledging that no sum can replace the lives lost, he emphasized that the court's decision demonstrates what "justice in today’s world" can accomplish, particularly for those who commit heinous acts. "This ruling is most appropriate for a wealthy tycoon who callously disregarded the lives of others," he added.

As Minister of Justice, Mr. Rith reaffirmed his commitment to oversee the law's implementation throughout the appeals process, ensuring that Srey Sina remains ineligible for any reduction in sentence or pardon. He also pledged to monitor the distribution of compensation to victims' families closely.

Thanking the public for their outrage and support during this challenging case, Mr. Rith acknowledged their role in allowing the court to conduct a responsible and lawful judgment.
